Cover Letter

A Cover Letter is a document submitted alongside your manuscript to provide context and highlight the importance of your research to the editorial team of the journal. It serves as your first point of communication with the journal and plays a critical role in introducing your work.

The primary objectives of the Cover Letter are:

  • to introduce your manuscript
  • explain the significance
  • confirm adherence to the journal guidelines
  • provide context to help the evaluation of your manuscript

An effective cover letter must be well-organized, free of jargon, and tailored specifically to the journal. While it should complement your manuscript, it must not merely repeat its content but instead focus on presenting a compelling case for why your study deserves consideration for publication.

For authors submitting to Applied Linguisitcs Inquiry, we recommend keeping the cover letter brief—typically one page—and ensuring it reflects professionalism and clarity.

  • American Psychological Association referencing style (7th edition)
